Abstract
Schaefer¡¯s bacterial agglutination test provided the basis of the serologic procedures for the classification and identification of atypical mycobacteria. While several modifications of the agglutination test have been proposed to simplify its procedure, absorptions of antisera with other species or type-strain have to be carried out to prepare species- or type-specific antisera. In this study, using the diluted working antisera against smooth type-specific strains, an attempt ,to serotype rough or hydrophobic strains of Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex not typable by agglutination test was made by fluorescent anti-complement technique. Of six strains of hydrophobic strains of M. avium-intracellulare complex, strains 2437 and 4649 fluoresced with type 1 sera of M. avium, and strains D4 and Kirchberg fluoresced with type 2 sera of M. avium. Strains 5832 and QP1 belonged to type 14 of M. intracellulare. This result indicated that using proper dilutions of antsera against smooth type strains the rough ,or hydrophobic strains of M. avium-intracellulare complex could be typed by fluorescent anti-complement technique.
